Cyberspace » Questions to Binärpilot

I read the interview on madtracker.org but I have still some questions:

1. which kind of VSTs do you use? Do you use any vst-synths or do you do everything by scratch?

2. how do you do vocals? which types of effects do you add to your vocals to let it sound that cool?

3. why are you doing such an amazing music and why am I unable to make anything like that? don't get me wrong, I don't wanna copy you... but I'm making music for almost 8 years now (I'm 21 yet) and I'm still beginner...

4. why don't you have a record deal? there's so much shitty music in the charts... something like your music has to be succesfull!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway thx to Lo-Fi that I found Binärpilot!!!!
1. Nowadays I frequently use a synth called FreeAlpha for pads, but other than that it's mostly done by tweaking "chip"-samples (sines, squares, etc). I also use a couple of VST's for mastering. Voxengo Elephant is lovely. I try not to get too crazy about VST's because a lot of it seems too easy for me. Not that I want it hard or whatever, but I don't want to load up a plug and just click click click there's a bassline. I need to feel like I've put something of myself into it. Like presets are a good starting point. but they're often more misleading than guiding.

2. The thing about doing vocals is that you really need to do takes over and over and over again to get it sounding right. Also, microphones are very different. I use a Shure, so I know it's going to boost lower frequencies and I have to have that in mind when I mix the vocals into the track. I use mDa's vocoder with a little bit of reverb to make it sound like the computer is singing. There is a lot of tweaking the parameters of the vocoder to get the sound I want, but I couldn't give you a "How-to" because it's not exact science. I just go with whatever sounds right for that track.

3. For me it was a question of "finding myself" in music. Like, skill isn't everything with music, you have to have something to say. If you break down the elements that make up my tracks it's all very basic, really, it's the sum of them that makes some people think it must be very complex. I guess I just have an unorthodox approach to composing. I don't know if this makes any sense. Mimicing other peoples style is a good way to learn new techniques and whatnot, but it's not the equivalent of making good music yourself. I think you should ask yourself what it is you want with your music, and try to work out a sense of identity from that.

4. I think there's several reasons I'm not signed to any label. For one I've never sent a demo (yes, I am very lazy). Secondly, I want all my music to be free (not very popular with labels) and third, well, I don't think it has enough commercial appeal to attract bigger labels (bigger meaning I could live off it). Sure, the internet has welcomed me with open arms (you guys rock), but on the whole, more mainstream-ish songs like "Destroy..." are few and far in between, simply because I refuse to take things like "Is this to weird?" into consideration when I'm making a track. If a song turns out very cheesy and accesible then that's great, if it doesn't and sounds more like I got my foot caught in a blender, then that's great too; As long as it means something. Mass appeal is not important to me at all.

Hope that answers your questions!

thank you so much for answering my questions. that's one of the advantages of the internet. DIRECT FEEDBACK!!

I use FreeAlpha myself from time to time but actually I use "StringSynth" more often for pads. If I want to get a more chippy pad I use Syntendo.

I tested the mdaVocoder but didn't get a good sound... as you said, tweaking, knob until you drop.

you mentioned your complex sound. as you said in the interview you never know how a song develelopes... I like it in your music but for me a song has to have a clear structure... sometimes it comes out quite boring and foreseeable... till last year I was doing dance/trance/techno music (you can still hear that in my music) and I had to achieve a more electronically sound... that took some months... MadTracker was a good help for that because it's very intuitive.

anyway keep on working that way. and when you come to Germany one day I will be there to see you :)

Another question to alexander that I've been wanting to ask ever since I discovered his excellent music:

Is it possible that you'd do a remix of Daft Punk's "Voyager"?
I love your work and I love Daft Punk, so I'm deeply interested in a Binär-remix :)

(Also got to say that I use your Aerodynamic remix as my cell phone ringtone^^)

If I am to do another Daft Punk remix it might just as well be "Voyager" as any other track of theirs. However I am very busy with my own stuff nowadays, prolly be some time before I do another remix, but don't loose hope; I'll keep your wish in the back of my head.

(Haha, cool!)

I'd like to see a Voyager cover as well, very good track indeed.

Most important one: Did I see you sitting in a cafè in Oslo on Monday? I went by, started to stare and thought to myself "God damn, was that him?". I just need to know : )

I have a doppelganger? They're here! To arms!

Wasn't me. I rarely go out. I'm too busy developing agoraphobia.

We upload our videos to MSG Varsity, we were wondering if we used your music if we would have to license it. I am a digital media student but we are required to sometimes upload it to MSG Varsity. Thank you.

Hey Boltse, I can answer this question for you, too:
If you read the footer on this website, you'll find this:

Binärpilot is Alexander Støver. Music licensed under Creative Commons.
For commercial licensing please contact Jamendo.

So if you don't consider your video to be commercial, you can use the music under the conditions in the link!
Who ever reads the footer nowadays? I mean, he could even hide secret track releases down there and I would never notice.
Yeah, to be honest I used CTRL+F to search for "license".

Student projects are always OK. Just make sure to link the site somewhere.
What if I want to use the music for my own pleasure? Do I have make a video out of it or something?
Oh dear.
You didn't answer my question!

We can only credit you for the music, we cannot link post a hotlink in the video.
It doesn't need to be a real link, simply having the site URL (ie. in the credits) is sufficient.

I'm not sure where to ask this, so I'll just take a shot here.

Several years ago I was introduced to your music with 2 songs, one is "Ah (Celebrate)" and the other was called "Gesutch Preview"
This is the subject of this post.

It was mainly the song "(gesouble) gesutch", but it had some differences. They are both, to me at least, great tracks, but I have some good memories connected to the 'preview'-one. I also (maybe risking being flamed) must confess that I prefer that one of the two. After my MP3-player crashed and my only copy of that song at the time was lost to me, I have searched the web for it to no awail.
So I ask you; Do you know of that which I speak, and is this track available somewhere, still in circulation?
Do you perchance have it stashed somewhere?
Is there a way I could get my (virtual) hands on it?

Thanks for your music, and thank you for your time.
Can't say that I remember the preview you speak of, but unfortunately that module was lost during the great hard drive crash of year something. Maybe someone else has it?
I will check what I have on my drives when I get home.

Also: How's it going at Finn.no?

I did not find this one on my hard drive. I have to check my external ones, but I can't seem to find them at the moment.
Loving FINN, the Great Place To Work-awards are not gratuitous.
They have Farris on tap! And fancy coffee makers!
Real Farris (blue, green?) or just carbonated water?
Alexnader is gonna post a shitty meme rinnow!
god damnit.
ftr the original meme is awesome but he ruined it.

OKAY

We only have carbonated water, which I never drink anywas.

Fun part is that the original Dolan made fun of memes by making them absurd and retarded (even more). I love that ones, but I've not seen any in that style apart from the original Finnish ones by that one "artist".

And wtf is skitch.
