Cyberspace » What is your opinion of the theatre?

I love the theatre! When I go to college, I want to double major in Technical Theatre and General Theatre. I just want to be in the theatre. I don't care if I am onstage or backstage. Is there anyone else that likes the theatre as much as me? (probably not, but just though I'd ask)
Unfortunately, theatre today is overpriced and class divisive; very dissimilar to theatre of the ancient times or even up until the 1900s. Back then it was considered civic duty for all to attend, and up to the 1900s a comglomeration of social stratum could be found at shows.

Don't let the man bring you down, though.

meh... don't care much either way. nothing against those who like theatre.
I've never been, actually. Mandatory school plays not counted. I'd like to sometime though.
I've been to the opera once. It was ok, but I think I'd prefer it to the theatre.
I've been to operas (both in north of Norway (Harstad), in Oslo and now in NYC), normal theatre plays and musicals. Personally I prefer going to a play where I've read the book, assuming there's a book. For instance, old time Norwegian classics such as Ibsen, or Wergeland.

But you've got to want it. Enforced theatre is like enforced rape; you want to leave but you can't cause you're strapped to the bed or whatever.
Is there such a thing as consensual rape?
C&H rocks!
All of the theater kids at my school are godawful annoying. However, I think it might be just my school.
at my school, it was a mixed bag. i knew quite a few, though.

I go to an arts school too (Sheridan College, second oldest Computer Animation course in the world), where I study Media (basically a film/sound/tv/whatever course).

We see the theatre (yes, I just spelt it like that too) kids as an opportunity to tape a play with free school equipment and sell it back to them for $$$ :D
Commerce through abuse. I like it Anthony, I really do.
You couldn't do that with my school, us drama kids have to tape the plays. The quality isn't always the best though....

Exactly. It's brilliant. Free market!

Exactly why at my school, *we* film it. We're the ones who have students specializing in camera technique, composition, and more. We get all the good A/V equipment anyways : P
If our theatre department wanted to do it, they could do an "ok" job in SD. We can shoot in HD and make it look 20x better.

To be fair though, anyone can do a good job if they take the time to learn it. The fact that the theatre students have to do everything live and can't rely on a second take like we can?
They earn my respect for that alone.

Thanks. It's really hard to cover up our mistakes on stage. Sometimes we have to pretend they didn't even happen. In our production of "Oklahoma", the gun we had for a gunshot sound went off when it wasn't supposed to and the actors on stage (I was running a spotlight, ergo, I was not onstage) looked for a split seccond, then went bact to the scene. It may not seem like much, but it was an accomplishment on our part.

i love it.
was in the theatre at my old school, (like, for teh youths) wrote one fourth of the script and acted as dj. dovregubben in Peer Gynt (rewrote to teh future, yes, or, to today) and had a part in the on in tenth grade (big part, biggest part. bragbragbrag,)

and was in the show at highschool last year as well.

this year I am, for the first time, going to experience being backstage and doing the stuff I never really had to care about before.

really like to watch it (if it is good) and enjoy acting as well.

so, what kind of school is it?
like, in details?
I go to Woodside High School. It is "the center for the arts and communication" We have drama, music, visual arts, dance, and a communications (like a news show type thing) magnets. I am currently in the drama magnet and there are certian calesses you have to take to be in the magnets, like for a music magnet you have to take your branch of music and musicianship, and for drama you have to take Drama I, II, and III, & stagecraft I and II. The magnet teachers at our school are professionals who know what ther're doing and teach on a higher level than the other schools in our city. It's a really good high school to go to if you want to go into any of those job feilds.

A lot of the theater students in my high school are kind of annoying as well, though that doesn't stop me from giving it a go. I am actually going to be in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which opens tomorrow. Pretty excited about it.

I went to theater once, and it was to watch an english play. I liked it very much, it was last year.
However, I could never have a main part in a play, I am too shy. :x
Today I actually went to Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. But it was not an act, it was an Evening with Kevin Smith!

Hay Guys! I just got a part for a little one act. It's an children's play and we're going to preform it to a couple of elementary schools. It's about a lion who dosen't want to be a lion any more. He wants to be things like a pirate, detective, baseball pitcher, etc... I play a little girl Named Marylin who is always talking about food.
congrats.
hope it turns out well:D
Hey I could do that! I talk about food all the time. Seriously.

Well, congrats on the part, and good luck!
Awww... Thanks you guys! I'm going to be preforming it four times in front of a lot of little kids!

Got Godot?

This is a picture of my friend and I preforming a scene from "Waiting for Godot." I'm the one in the red shirt.
3 days later…
is the set projected onto the back? In middle school, i saw a production of Guys and Dolls where they did that. I see the screen in the back, so... there you go.
Well, That upside-down stool was our set for this scene. That screen is called a cyclorama (or cyc for short) and it's made of this cloth material. When you shine a light on it, it absorbs it instead of reflecting it.
