Hey guys
Which Operating Systems are you using and which are running at home ?

I only use Zenwalk - Core (Slackware Distribution)

btw...thx for textonly-version alexander .. i'm one of the "linkser ";)

Xubuntu (Debian) // WinXP (PSD, WC3, DOTA, TF2, SC:BW and such)

I dual boot Mac OS X version 10.5.5 and Windows XP (solely for Steam games, like TF2).

I honestly don't understand the appeal of Linux beyond it's uses on servers. (inb4 people interpret my comment as "I don't understand linux, durr hurr".) Mac OS X is fantastic.

Custom Windows XP at home, Mac OS X and TXP at work (Ubuntu and FreeBSD on servers).

@ Ubuntu (for my nephews)

XP.

Mostly Archlinux for daily use/work, Vista for gaming

Main: XP Pro SP2, Stripped down to fuckery and skinned with "Licorice VS"
Work: ^ Same!
Eee PC: ^ Saaame!
Server: CLI Fedora Core 6

Also got some Macs all with Leopard.

Getting meself a Eee PC 1000 soon. It'll run pre-installed Xandros. If that doesn't fit my needs, I'll reconsider life.

I really, really, really hate to start a flamewar, but Mac OSX is professional and stable. I'd say it's significantly more stable and compatible than any distro of Linux. The only thing Linux has going for it is the price, in my humble opinion. I realize the ability to customize to an excessive amount is cool, but is it something that anybody actually ever needs, and is it worth the hassle? Maybe I'm just lazy but I think not.

(This forum needs more flame wars.)

The point is Mac is expensive (in opposite to linux) and i've never seen MAC server ;)
Ok it's a Unix derivate but in my opinion MAC is just a Trend thing
Ok for real artists/musicians it's useful ,but not for lil girls or buisness people.

I think this is a case in which the internet serves only to obfuscate your message. I do understand the points you've made about networking and business place efficiency; however my original question was directed more towards home or personal use. Like, Linux just seems like it would be a bitch to get anything to work with (eg, games, applications, printers).

But seriously, Apple clearly needs to cater to little girls more ;)

That's just about as ignorant as people slagging on Linux for being an inferior OS. "Battle not with monsters lest you become one."

As an avid PC-goon I've had my share of reservations around Macs, but after using one for a while now I'm more impressed than anything else. Being based on BSD I get a stable development environment and (for the most time) a highly intuitive graphical OS. X window ain't got nothing on Cocoa motherfucker ;) I'm not saying Linux is shit, I'm not saying OS X is the best, but taking the "Mac is just for trendy homos"-stance (which sometimes holds water) is just as ludicrous as the opposite; Linux is for total nerds and you can't even surf the web on it (which also sometimes holds water).

Hmm Maybe in Norway it's a different thing ,but here in germany i've never seen a programmer with a mac
only people like fotographs,Flash designer,students etc.

But thats here in germany since a half year a hard trend that everyone gets a MAC-Thing.

I asked a girl in class why she went to blow her budget (haha) on a Mac. She answered: Because it's so cute and cool, and I can, like, check my facebook on my desktop and did I mention it was cute, with all it's accessories?

If you work on movie editing, large amounts of codes or anything that really requires machine power, wouldn't a Mac be the obvious choice? But for gaming, watching movies, surfing and writing documents - isn't a cheap(er) PC good enough?

I play Q3 on my iMac against my brother on his MacBook at 200fps no problem !

I'm platform neutral, but OS X is my current main and preferred (not just because I have a MacBook Pro with a dedicated nVidia 8600 m GT graphics adapter and LED backlighing).

I use Linux occasionally, I have quite a few friends who use it as their main, and we all also use Windows XP+Windows Vista where needed.

Really, we have minimum three computers, and at least one on each OS in each house (File servers, rack LAN game servers, Bittorrent seed box, laptops, desktops, etc...)

Our Linux of choice is Ubuntu.

Linux boys:

It's *always* going to be for nerds, and servers.

Mac OS X:
Limited by Apple's hardware, makes for a more stable OS! Pretty interface is also a big bonus.
Shittest part is obviously the price of that Hardware, and everything is shareware!
It would be nice if more family computers were Macs, how many virus-free family PCs have you seen before? Ahem.

Windows:
Good for business, gamers and *people who actually know how to manage their computer*. Very tweakable, lots of shit available for it. Easy to pirate as well, will install on anything.
Because of the amount of malware, I'd recommend a Mac for a family computer, ANY day.

I'd just add my Mac and windows setups are both clean, files sorted in right folders, no cluttering on the desktop, etc... But it's harder to accomplish on Windows than it is on Mac OS.

Even if you're into that kind of thing, OSX has a feature called "Spaces" built in that does virtual desktops very well.

SOFTWARE
XP:
- Pretty user friendly.
- Compatible with everything not specifically designed for OS or Linux.
- Most stable version of windows ever.
- Expensive.

OSX:
- Hella user friendly
- Mild compatability issues, not as bad these days as Apple gets a greater market share
- Stable
- Costs money?
- Eye candy.
- I hope you hate playing computer games.

Any Linux:
- User friendly? Heh.
- Only works with open source stuff or stuff designed for linux (i.e., open source stuff). And the drivers for anything are hidden on the triple-secret fourth internet or something.
- Don't even try to talk to me about emulation.
- Stable (I've heard)
- Sometimes eye candy (LOKK AT THAT ROTATING DESKTOP CUBE GODDAMN).
- Don't even try to tell me that OpenOffice is superior to Microsoft Office.
- But it's free!

HARDWARE/THE COMPANIES THEMSELVES
Microsoft
- Microsoft doesn't really have much proprietary stuff, I don't really know what to say here.
- Funny commercials with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates
- Sometimes Microsoft is a dick, I've heard.

Apple
- Damn expensive, but well constructed.
- They look nice (I think they do), but you *might* look like a person trying really hard to be trendy.
- Proprietary/specialization (You want to upgrade your RAM? A billion dollars for DDR8 RAM or something).
- Sometimes Apple is a dick, I've heard.
- Those goddamn fanboys.

Linux:
- There is no company!
- See previous comment about secret hardware drivers.

Hopefully this kinda appears as a neutral stance, but sometimes I subconciously troll Linux users because I'm tired of hearing about how stable or something Linux is.

Also, Steve Jobs is waaay more of a dick than Bill Gates.

Finally something we all can agree on: They're both dicks (Bill 'n Steve). Also, if I lived in Pokémon world, Steve Ballmer would've been my choice.

My point was that Bill Gates is a cool and benevolent guy. He donates millions (billions?) of dollars to charities.

I completely agree with Tylr's post regarding the threeway OS split (except Apple laptops can indeed use regular notebook memory, even if they are proprietary with other stuff)
